[handwritten: an additional] ridge of displaced clay was thrown of the cylinder seal, up on each side, as in the case of Sh 580. The width of the design and presumably of the seal, was 1.7 cm. The design is of such a nature that no point of beginning and end can be established even by minutest observation of the handle itself. Although I have spoken of a cylinder seal, there might seem to be the possibility in this case of use of a wooden matrix instead.
The design consists of a stem, represented by two closely set parallel ridges, from which sprout, in close succession, finely outlined antithetical leaves, in the form of tear drops. The relief is deep and for the most part clear.
Maximum height of the fragment is 19.7 cm. Width of the handle is 3.5 cm. It is Find No. 39 of Tomb 19 and belongs to Burial Period B, which is dated LC II (1275-1225 B.C. according to Daniel's tentative scheme).
Although there are precedents for cylinder seal impressions on handles in the Levant, the inspiration for Sh 545 is almost certainly derived instead from the relief decoration on metallic vessels as it occurs in the Minoan- Mycenean world. The foliate band pattern is directly from the same source, occurring both in the ceramic repertory [handwritten: 52 53] and as relief decoration on rims and handles of metal vessels. [handwritten: 5354] The pattern is also known in Cypriote or Cypro-Oriental workshops, as evidenced by ivory handles from Enkomi. [handwritten: 5455] But a comparison of the Bamboula handle with the Enkomi handles shows the metamorphosis which the delicate Minoan-Mycenean pattern underwent: the plasticity, the sharp definition, the clear outlining of each leaf [handwritten: in the matrix] is lost in a flat, massive stateliness. [handwritten: of the pattern] Exactly the same thing may be said of the plant pattern of Sh 579. One has only to compare it - or yet another example [handwritten: 55 56] from the graves of Mycenae - with the plants behind the resting bulls on the ivory … continues
