November 19, 1980Dear Martin:
Since sending you my own budget request for 1981 I have discussed with Spyro the matter of the publication by Dr. Ellen Herscher of the Cypriote objects in our collections from sites there other than our own excavations.
It is expected that Dr. Herscher will begin work on these shortly and that she will need study photographs since she will be on a commuting schedule from Washington.
We have considered requesting that the photographic work be done by the Museum's Photography Laboratory. Our estimate for the ca. 290 pieces, in two views, in black and white, amounts to 7395.00. This seems extravagant in view of this year's stringencies so Spyro and I are making other suggestions. I propose to undertake the photography myself with my own excellent Nikormat camera. It is Spyro's suggestion that the work be done in color, with two prints, one for us, one for Dr. Herscher. Color would, of course, be much more satisfactory for study purposes. The cost is tabulated on the attached budget request, a total of 1426.52, a very pronounced saving over 7395.00. The question of final black and white prints can perhaps be tackled in a subsequent year.
Sincerely,
G. Roger Edwards
