July 6, 1978Dear Martin:
You may recall that we had a conversation during the spring about financing Saul Weinberg's Cyprus publication. At the time you said that our section should have a fund or a budget for our various Cyprus (Kourion and Lapithos) publications.
With this in mind I consulted Gloria recently. She said that though it was hoped to have the overall Museum budget ready by July 1 she didn't see how it could be done so soon. So perhaps there is still time to put in a request for a Cyprus budget. She suggested a letter to you about it.
During the present fiscal year, 1978-1979, both Saul, for Bamboula architecture, and David Rupp, for the "Palace" and its mosaics, are apt to ask for money for various activities in connection with their publications. In addition I have recently had a generally favorable answer from Dorothy Hill with regard to a possible publication of the bronzes. She might well incur some expenses before the end of the fiscal year; it she takes on this publication. I have no real way of estimating the expenses of these three and those which might be incurred in connection with publication of Cyprus objects here (e.g. bronzes). May I suggest an overall figure, which may be generous, of ca. 2,000 - 2,500 to take care of all contingencies? As you know, we have never been in the budget before in all my 25 years taking care of our Cypriote concerns.
Sincerely,
G. Roger Edwards
