Dear Fro:
I am enclosing herewith a statement of accounts for Curium Excavations for the year 1948-49 and a separate statement for Curium Bluff accounts.
It will be seen that on the general accounts there is an overdraft of $618.15. The position is as follows: Overdraft 1947-48 $1,222.32 " 1948-49 618.15 Total $1,840.47 Bal. July 1, '49 13,159.53 Budget, 1949-50 $15,000.00 $15,000.00
On the Curium Bluff account there is an overdraft of $2,647.62. The position on July 1st. was as follows: Overdraft 1948-49 $2,647.62 Bal. July 1, '49 2,352.38 Budget, 1949-50 $5,000.00 $5,000.00
As you will remember the $10,000.00 grant ($5,000.00 for 1948-49 and an additional $5,000.00 for 1949-50) was obtained from the American Philosophical Society in the hope that the palace, theater, basilica and propylon on the bluff of Curium might be cleared sufficiently for adequate publication on this amount. Excavations were to be completed within a period of two years, 1948-50. Excavations to date have been in progress only on the palace and theater. July expenses for the current year were $1,102.99, leaving a credit balance of $1,249.39, an amount barely sufficient to complete work on these two buildings. It will not be possible, accordingly, with funds now available to carry out any excavations on the basilica or propylon. This has not come altogether as a surprise to us as will be made clear from last year's correspondence.
Very sincerely yours,
