the cult practice. Also found were fragments of a dozen bronze knives which we are tempted to associate with the sacrifice of the sheep and goats.
(3) SEMI-CIRCULAR ALTAR AND TEST TRENCHES (1981) Fig. 3
We excavated to virgin soil selected areas of this feature first identified and partially cleared by McFadden. Two scarab seal stones, one faience, one rock crystal were found within its foundations confirming a date roughly contemporary with that of the circular altar. A cobble pavement throughout the vicinity of the semi-circular altar probably served to support smaller altars and dedications, and to prevent the area from becoming muddy in the winter. Flanking the north-south wall foundation we dug several trenches which revealed no further altars, but which yielded masses of broken pottery and fragments of life-size terracotta statues, all archaic in date of the sort that has been found at other sites in Cyprus, notably at Ayia Irini.
(4) VOTIVE DEPOSIT (1981-1982) Fig. 4
Discovered just north of the Roman boundary in the coarse of tracing the north-south archaic wall foundation, the pit, roughly rectangular in shape, contained more than 10,000 tightly packed fragments of terracotta figurines. Upon analysis the fragments were seen to make up approximately 700 horse and rider groups and 300 chariot groups ranging from the 6th to the 4th century B.C. They are comparable to the deposit of figurines excavated at the south end of the Sanctuary in the mid-1930s which formed part of the basis of the terracotta publication by John and Suzanne Young. Our deposit also contained some 100 fragments of small limestone statues belonging to half a dozen draped male figures and an equal number of chariot groups; in addition, a six-nozzled star-shaped bronze lamp, and a six-sided stone seal of Egyptianizing type.
Subsequent to the deposit of the objects, two walls were built at right angles to one another, cutting through the deposit and using it to form the lowest layer of the walls. The floor levels associated with these walls
