April 4, 1983Dr. Ellen Herscher 3309 Cleveland Avenue N.W. Washington, DC 20008

Dear Dr. Herscher:

Thank you for your letter in reply to my questions about the Lapithos material. I am happy to know the history of it. It would be most appropriate I think, for us to sit down together and discuss the whole thing with a fresh start. As you may know Alan has returned to England and we have a new Publications Coordinator, Barbara Murray.

I have looked up your thesis in the library and I see the problem. It is an heroic job! At over 800 pages without illustrations it will be a very expensive publication and certainly too much for a single volume. Perhaps we could revise it in such a way that two volumes would be possible. In that way we could space out the production with the cost over more than one year. That would be a great help. I suggest that you give the idea some thought and call on me when next in Philadelphia so we can go into it in more detail. First of course we should complete the Cyprus "picture book." Then on to Lapithos! It will take some planning ahead for financing and I would like to be in a position to make a start on that so we can have some money available in calendar year 1984.

Whether you need to completely rewrite your text is, of course, up to you. I should think it perhaps more a matter of footnoting or revising specific items in relation to anything that changes your opinions since 1978. But we can discuss that when you come to Philadelphia. In any case I hope to be able to tell the Cypriots that we have a plan for publication as soon as we arrive at that point.
