UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-COLUMBIA
Dear Professor Edwards,
I am just on my way out of the country but I wanted to take a moment to respond to your last letter. First of all, I thank you very much for your kind words about the possibility of my coming to Penn. It would certainly be a wonderful thing for my family, especially since my relatives are getting older and I would be able to be with them much more than I can right now. I am wondering how long it will take for the whole matter to be decided but I guess nobody really knows. In any case, I am not looking for any employment elsewhere. I decided to turn down the Fulbright and directorship of the Cyprus American Research Institute offered to me for next year because I would prefer to stay at Missouri and be chairman for the next three years. But this does not mean I am not still interested in your position. Now for two other matters, one bad and one good. The bad item is that we have run out of spare money for this season and I will not be able to order as much in the way of photos and prints from you as I had hoped for now. I will be able to pay the $40.00 in orders you have already placed but I must ask you not to order any additional photos or prints because we are not able to afford it just now. That is the bad news. The better news is that a copy of my latest article about Kourion, showing how I was able to date both of the temples of Apollo, is included for you. I sent another copy to Dr. Wailes but did not send copies to other members of your hiring committee due to the few copies I received. I have additional articles emerging fairly soon and will keep you posted. I would have one final request, if I may. You showed me a very odd faience (I think) head in the Kourion collection and it had a Janus-like arrangement with one face looking in one direction and another in a different direction. It was quite small, maybe ten centimeters high. Do you remember it? I would like a photo of it, perhaps two. We can stretch our budget that far, anyway. That is all for now. If there should be, by any miracle, further developments concerning the position I shall be at Kourion House, Limassol District, Episkopi, Cyprus beginning June 5.
All best wishes,
