Feb. 5, 1980Dear Roger,

Virginia tells me that despite retirement you are keeping an eye on things at the Museum. However, if it is unfair to bother you with this request for new prints from George McFadden's 35 mm. rolls taken at the Kourion basilica, please pass it on to the right quarter.

I have arranged 9 plates to go with my account of George's excavations, using the enlargements you had made for me last winter wherever possible, but in 5 cases I need new enlargements as follows:

3 glossy prints enclosed (figs. 3, 9 and 34). I need larger enlargements of these. The final shape and size of each on the plates is indicated on the back, but if it is not easy to achieve these exactly on the new enlargements, it will be quite all right if they are made a bit larger than I require. In that case I can give directions for reduction by the engraver.

2 sepia prints enclosed (figs. 12 and 22). Of these I need glossy enlargements, preferably (as indicated on the back) taking-in more at the top if there is more on the negative (and proportionately less at the bottom). Here also larger prints than the final sizes are acceptable.

George's roll and frame nos. are on the back in each case. There is of course no hurry, mid-May (when we should be back from Cyprus) would be fine. I would like to have the enclosed prints back with their replacements.

While on the subject of photographs, long ago, when I first took the basilica under my wing, Virginia gave me a set of enlargements from the 35 mm. rolls she took of the marble plaque fragments. These have been most useful and I would be very interested to know if her relevant rolls (nos. 5,6,7,8,10 and 11) are ever traced in the PUM, where she believes them to be. If they are found, you need not be afraid that I would place a large order for enlargements, for by now I have my own negatives one or two items which are not of most of them. But there are among Virginia's enlargements and may have been photographed in the village; in these I am particularly interested.

I now have an account of all the excavations on and around the basilica site in first draft, but have still much to write on the architecture, decoration etc. and those who have promised contributions have also much to do. But by the end of this year we should have a better idea of the shape and size of the publication, something at least to serve as a basis for discussion about a joint DO - PUM effort, or whatever.

With best wishes to you from us both for your retirement,

Sincerely,
