July 29, 1978Dear Saul:

I have now read, for the first time anyway, the pages of the mss. which you sent me. It seems to me, of course, very competent and indeed very ingenious. You seem to have presented it in a fresh manner despite the lapse of years.

I do not know what you plan for an ultimate table of contents. You may be anticipating me. It has occured to me that I would like, in addition to Area E, to see a general summary of some sort. Possibly the architectural layout in general of successive periods or of the most important period or whatever. Perhaps also a summary of construction practices. A third matter concerns the objects. You do mention them in connection with particular houses but I wonder if it would not be useful to your readers to refer to the specific publication numbers in Benson and the dating he provides in his catalogue? These thoughts are those of a layman in your field and I suggest them in that light.

Minor items:

Preface, p. 3: footnotes 4-6 missing. Area A-7, next to last line: "Wall VIII and VIII"???

I will write to Jack and encourage him to cooperate.

Well, cheers!
