Dr. Vessos Karageorghis, Director Department of Antiquities Cyprus Museum Nicosia

CYPRUS

May 24, 1976Dear Vassos:

Within recent months I was approached by Dr. David W. Rupp of Brock University (you may well know him) for permission to publish the mosaics of Curium which our Museum excavated. He seems to be a very good scholar and very well thought of by our colleagues at Bryn Mawr where he got his Ph.D. I have, accordingly, given him permission and am in the process of providing him with drawings and photographs with which to begin his study. I have suggested to him also that he might include a study of the architecture of the "Palace" and Baths, since they are inextricably connected with the mosaics. He hasn't replied on this aspect, however, as yet. I wonder, actually, how feasible it would be to study the architecture now: perhaps you can enlighten me.

In this connection I have had, however, an uneasy feeling, and I hope you can dispel it. That is, some years ago someone from Cyprus whose name I have forgotten came to see me. I think he may have been on your staff at Episkopi at the time. He certainly said something about the mosaics and I just don't recall what his interest was, whether in publication or other. At any rate, there was no formal request for permission to us and I don't think I even agreed verbally. Be that as it may, I should like to clear with you that there is no problem or conflict involved in our commissioning David to go ahead with the work. I am sure he will do a good job, one with which we will all be pleased.

Best greetings
