IPISKOPI VILLAGE LIMASSOL CYPRUS
28 Feb 58
Dear Roger:
Yours of 22 Feb. I entirely concur in all/you say except that in last para when you ask for a copy of the Acropolis grid plan at a reduced scale I am prompted to offer the following comments: A reduction of this sort takes quite a time to do; Xfis & I are going to do soundings at Soli in a few days; I venture to doubt if you really need a reduction (a) at this stage, (b) at any time - since the printer can make a photo-mechanical reduction which will look better than a 1/1 reproduction; if Terence Mitford is to "judge" he wants in the way of a final Acropolis grid plan" (as you put it) he can do so just as well from a contact sunprint of the existing plan as from a specially reduced one. Accordingly, I am sending him two such contact sunprints of the existing plan with an explanation of why I have not sent a reduction at this stage. This action will save time and money (I hope).
The existing Acropolis grid (1/1000) has, in pencil, contours and old trenches and outlines of buildings; in ink, contour numbers, xixing titling, rocky features, road and grid (dotted). The pencil stuff can be erased or inked in at any time. The old trench numbers are not at present on the plan but can be put on - and have been put on the sunprints sent to Mitford.
Numbers and names &c can be put temporarily on any plan by the printers and changed as the plan is used for different purposes, so, perhaps for the Curium grid, and in any case for the Water Supply Map of Kourion Territory for such locations as syllabic inscriptions in situ a number or letter can be placed temporarily for the photo-mechanical reproduction process. There is really no need to have a special drawing for each publication.
I am, as you know, frightfully flexible in my outlook and if you don't agree with the foregoing I shall do my best to meet your wishes. [handwritten: What I am doing now is the best I can do & give Terence Smith & bring me...]
Handwritten: I have already asked you for 50 plus copies of the Water Supply map of Kourion Territory. Extra copies of all the maps and plans used in publications would be gratefully accepted here. They would be most useful. Also we would like to have a photograph of George McFadden to put up in the Museum we are forming at Curium House. That reproduced in the Youngs' Terracotta publication is very good.
