DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES NICOSIA.
23rd April, 19593/35/6.
C.Roger Edwards Esq., Pennsylvania University Museum, 33rd and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia 4., PA. U.S.A..
Dear Roger,
We count it real bad luck missing you both in Philadelphia and in Athens, where we spent a short time on our return journey.
Thank you for your letter of 26th March and for taking up the several requests I made to Rodney. I have already received(and paid for) the photographs of the Byzantine Gold Girdle. The photos of the Curium mosaics are not needed urgently either by us or by Dumbarton Oaks.
The Basilica is much on my conscience. I very much doubt if I shall be able to do anything there this year now that the processes of transition to the new regime are making unexpected demands on me. I shall hand over the Department not later than 19th Feb. next year and that done I hope to be able to give my attention, or part of it, to the Basilica. With 1st March as a tentative target date I must bestir myself to raise funds to complete the excavations of the building and its annexes, for I am encouraged in that ambition by the interest my tentative restored plan aroused at the Munich congress and in the States. What remains of the £200 you left with me for the purpose will not go far, and before turning elsewhere I feel I should ask you what are the prospects of further support for this project by the University Museum and its backers. It would certainly simplify matters if at the division there were no other mouths to feed.
Handwritten: I saw Joe today; he is giving himself for Gordion. The account of Cucinati interests me greatly. What a wonderful bit of information was is passed in that moment! Helen joins me in sending you all good wishes. Yours, ever, Peter.
