THE ART MUSEUM PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY
[handwritten: Dr. Young I shall drop him a line about all this - something in his response to the report of the Museum? I can't say more]
September 19, 1956Dear Dr. Kidder:
The enclosed is a copy of the report sent to the American Philosophical Society. Reading between the lines, you can see that there is still much to be done. As you know, working through not-very-legible notebooks and incomplete records is tedious! But I am sure the material can be whipped into decent shape as a final report of the excavation and be useful to people working on similar and related problems.
It seems foolish to have the architectural drawings inked until I know precisely which ones should be used or should be combined into a more useful scheme. In some instances, inked sketches in the notebooks will have to be adapted from rough pencil sketches in the notebooks to make the excavation report as complete a record as possible. Similarly, it seems preferable to work with the existing Leica prints and negatives, so long as that is feasible, and to enlarge selected ones at a later stage. So, there are still some expenses to be met. In the meantime, do you think I should present a financial statement? (It has only just occurred to me that the APS might look upon this illustrative material as "publication expense", but I have been thinking of it all along as necessary to the preparation of the manuscript. I hope we agree!)
Sincerely yours,
