of a group of Hellenistic and Roman tombs excavated at Curium, Cyprus, by the late George McFadden for the University Museum (University of Pennsylvania) in 1940-1942. Only one has been published. At the invitation of the University Museum, the applicant wishes to go to Cyprus in the summer of 1955 to make the necessary first-hand study of the pottery, lamps and other objects found in the remaining tombs. Preliminary work from the Museum's records and final preparation for publication will be done in this country on the applicant's own time. Publication of the material is desirable not so much as completion of unfinished work as a contribution to more detailed knowledge than we now possess of the chronology, manufacture, and distribution of Hellenistic and Roman products in the eastern Mediterranean.
