Dear G. Roger: August 13 (Friday). Yours of 5 August. I have written, two weeks ago, both to Raci and to Kinay, asking the former to connive about fixing the roof of the house and to consult with you when you get to Ankara about it if it couldn't be done before you get there; also to consult with you about the future activities of Cemal. Machteld wrote that he is not much use in school, and that he wants to be apprenticed to a cobbler in Polatli. This is perhaps the best solution, but I don't know the circumstances of apprenticeships in Turkey, and if you consult with Raci I agree to the payment of whatever may be necessary, if anything is, from our account. The latter I wrote officially requesting some sherds. About the sherds, I don't think it would be worth while for you to go through the ambar; there is a collection you got together, and a great pile of decorated tile fragments on the huyuk. Some of these I think will mend up, whenvth they arrive in Philadelphia, Good to have some samples of each kind. There is no reason why we shouldn't ask for sherds each year and get as many as we want; and I think the gesture might help with the committee this year. Abdullah and Bayram - yes, I think it was 40 a month. Raci will tell you if prices have gone up with cost of living; if so, maybe 50. I do not remember until when money was left for them, I think until September 1; anyhow you did it, and if you don't remember Muzaffer Bey will. Should think supply money for until April 1. Permits for jeep and theodolite already renewed for two years (or so Kinay says) Haven't had Machteld's letter yet. Tomorrow I leave for ten days, to New Hampshire for week end, Boston for Arch Club meeting, and Marthas Vneyard for next weekend. Have caught somebody to do sog-ditting; hope I will find them all alive and flourishing on my return. Adanas puppies now enormous and eating me out of house and home, and Filbys also growing fast. One has already gone to Princeton (Adanas Fat Girl) and one of Fildys to go when weaned; Charles has taken two, one from each litter, and will collect them on Sept. 10. I expect to keep one of each litter, but that still leaves eleven to be disposed of. Have considered your exchange list, and advised with Ellen. You and she are much better acquainted with the available than I am. My suggestions as follows (while approving your list) Lamps: we have lots of Roman, & could stand more; but we have practically no Greek or Hell. On list I see types VI-IX; and any that are decent would be welcome. Also local imitations thereof. Sculpture: any additional that is presentable? Pottery: is there any Roman that is presentable? As you know we have very little of it. Kaloriziki tombs: we are short of archaic tomb groups. As you will remember we have enough Br. Age and Iron age (geometric) to choke a horse. Can exchange these after publication. But archaic? Bamboula: we cannot trace here record of fate of "Voupha" tomb in last division. Ellen thinks we ought to have it, and if we don't, we should have Bam tomb 38, and if we don't have that we should scratch around hard to find a good base-ring vase, bowl. Ellen says why not a few (say 2 of each kind) S.A.H, for teaching purposes. You will remember better than I what there is already here; as I remember, mostly (or all) Rhodian. Should think your list as it stands, with possibility of these additions. There will remain for future division then: Ermoyennis (did I understand that Tiggie might publish it ?) Sotira; Bamboula numbered sherds; mosaics. Of all these I should think that Ermoyennis has to stay intact in Cyprus until studied. Mosaics not yet clear. But for Sotira and Bamboula would it be possible to have a sort of tentative division, so that e.g. Bamboula stuff will not have to go back from here to Cyprus in toto, and then part of it come back here? Benson could best advise as to what if anything is desirable. If these things would involve a trip to Nikosia museum, dont bother about it for now; but if you have any clear idea about what is desirable, tentative split could be made in advance and Sotira stuff sent of when Dikaios finished with it, Bamboula stuff sent back when Benson finished with it ???? Ellen also says anything that is L.H. III or local imitation thereof, from Bamboula we should try to latch on to; assume this all included in Bam. sherds. More power to you in making a new show when you come back. If I see George Hanfmann in Boston next week I will try to find out the activities of DeC F in re the mosaics, and let you know. But hope that Dick will go ahead with architectural-archeological study of the palace as suggested. Have had several inquiries about courses for the fall term, among them about Ptg. Told them all we would decide when demands of majority of students were in, in September, and when you were back. Suspect for you either Hell arky or Hell archit.; I gave forerunner of one, D.D.T. forerunner of other, several students intrigued and want continuations; also museum course. For me, baby course as usual, and one sem if all demands and capabilities can be channelled into same channel. Trust you wont have a sem. if fall; maybe in spring. My best to assembled chojux
