Dear G. Roger: August 6 1954.
Yours of July 28 today - or rather, it came yesterday but I was not in to see it. After a week in which the thermo went to 96 - 98 every day we now have it cool for a change, but nobody objects. And at last we have had some rain; I hope the garden on which I had expended months of tender care will revive a little. But probably too late. All the dogs flourishing and send their love. Tell Dick that almost they have persuaded me that Jerry Run is a good thing; but it is not malicious, as I had planned for one litter of six, and instead got two litters of nineteen. Also thank him for his letter, and apologise for not a separate answer. As to the palace, I think we left it this way (between me and George Hanfmann): that Dick would do the architecture, if he chose, and not the mosaics, which he seemed unwilling to do as involving a lot of research in iconography, style, etc.; and that was the part in an any case in which Deke was really interested. If Dick did the architecture, well and good; if Deke did the mosaics, ditto. If Deke did not do them, or did them in a hopeless way, then we could put out a picture book which would make them available in good illustrations, and with the necessary archaeological data, for those who mig might want to do the iconography etc. Ths was the last proposal, and I have heard nothing further from George so I assume that he agrees to it. In any case I should think that Dick is free to do any of the architecture he wants, and we would be grateful if he did.
About the other mosaic project: I am glad you are making borings, or rather that Joe is, as this was a definite appropriation by the board of Museum funds for that specific purpose, in the hope of loot; and I don't think we can misappropriate the & 600 to other purposes.
About the Kafizin sherds: I guess I had forgotten about the March letter. By all means let them await their companions from Copenhagen, and trust to Peter to make a fair redivision. Hadn't realized there were external things holding it up, and was thinking of a clean-up operation.
About Rover: if Peter is willing to undertake it, it would be a blessing ad save Henry from a side trip to Cyprus. But I thought it might be an imposition. (on Peter)
Will write to Raci about roof, in case he doesnt believe Machteld or consider her official enough. Also will write officially to Cahit asking for a collection of sherds, to be dilivered to you.
Have finished long since, & sent to Athens, Kran Harman grave for Arky; Gordion preliminary report 1953, for A.J.A., now beigg retyped after editing; pp. 30 with figs. 38; hope this wont stagger dick. ILN Gordion finished, but am awaiting better prints; as Reuben in abroad will have to think of somebody else, or wait. Am about to embark of Balkh for A.J.A., then will go away for a couple of weeks, provided I can find a reliable sog-ditter for my absence. Of the 17 surviving pups I have disposed of 4, and will keep 2; which leaves 11 marketable. Perhaps Dick would like one? They are getting so sweet now that I will find it very hard to part with any of them; Adana's are MY GIRL (the one I am going to keep), Fat Girl, Bursa, Miss Alishar, and Tigess; the boys are Buster, Spot, Tige, andNosey. Filby's are getting rwal cute too; I havent named them all yet, as their little personalities are not so developed; but I havent decided yet whether to keep Artaxerxes or Tissaphernes. Both very cute.
If find sog ditter will leave Sat. 14 and go to friends in N.H. for weekend; in middle of next week meeting in Boston of archaeological club- cant miss opportunity of seeing your old guide and mentor D.M.R., and watching him blackball any names of new members nominated. If he isnt there perhaps we can sneak by a lot of worthy people who have excited his wrath or jealousy. Then to my sisters at the vineyard for a few days, and so back refreshed, to find that the animals have eaten each other no doubt.
Must stop as Ellen is shouting about coffee, and there isnt much else to write abput anyway. Even if I do waste 2 cents worth of this valuable paper]
Best regards to collected tribe -
