I have recently had a chance to discuss with Peter the matter of the Neolithic dig here in which you are interested. It is the site of Kouphovouno beyond Kandou, isn't it? As I said before, I think we could be of some assistance in getting you a grant for it. Another aspect of the matter is sponsorship, since the Cyprus government requires that an excavator be sponsored by some institution. I can't speak for the University Museum beyond the limits of our program here; whether or not it would be willing to sponsor anything further here, [handwritten: I] "extracted" itself (from trustees' point of view!). I can't say with any certainty: we would have to see. Peter proposes two other alternatives in case they don't wish to: 1) a joint excavation with the Department of Antiquities, meaning Dikaios, and that would depend on how many irons he had in the fire at the time proposed to excavate; or 2) an excavation sponsored by the University of Missouri or some other responsible organization.

In the latter case certainly and possibly also in the former there would be the added attraction for you of getting a part of the finds to take to America for the institution sponsoring you. If we sponsored you the finds would come to us.

You will probably wish to think about this. There is no hurry, anyway, since I think you had thought of the summer of 1955 for excavation, hadn't you?

How are the present year's plans shaping up? Many good wishes for them.

Sincerely,
