February 17, 1954Dear Roger:
Thanx for yours of the 10th. Didn't realize how slow I was on the last one. Spose I kept waiting for one more thing to turn up in the basement on that list of losters.
Glad you sent me the cat numbers which are free. Will try to get on it, but don't just see the light yet.
I notice Jack was looking for Tomb 15 in Nicosia. That's what I did the first time I checked the records with Mr. Megaw. But he put me straight and I am sure that somewhere there is a newer copy of the "index of Bamboula tombs". I am enclosing another copy of my latest version. Anyway Tomb 15 is all in Philadelphia, and properly so. It is Tomb 24 which was awarded to Nicosia but which accidentally got sent to Phila. I shall send you a copy of the "award letter" which Megaw re-copied for me the last time I was in Nicosia.
About the other gold--i.e. missing things from Nicosia tombs. There simply isn't a scrap around here. We inspected all Miss Bruckner's hidey-holes. The only same I know of in Curium is Christos's secret places. He was pretty mad one time at me because I found it again, is in the corner cupboard, up on a pretty high shelf behind the north door to the east apotheke. There were some big cardboard boxes, inside which, and behind which he allowed some gold to be stored, unbeknownst to others. As last resort you better ask him.
Also you remember about the big basket on a low centrally located shelf along the west wall of the west apotheke. In it I had gathered up odds and ends of things which I found then and believed belonged in Nicosia and also another basket for philadelphia. They must still be around but I believe I listed on the original inventory sheets that location for the objects in the baskets. Things "missing 1948" and not found in 1949 when I was there I still have no fertile ideas about. Of course, Nicosia may have put them in a good hidey-hole and forgotten where, too, darn it.
I have a vague idea about the heavy stone objects on Jack's first list. I am sure that the heavy querns, etc., were never sent to Phila. but were heaped up on a pile somewhere about the place there in Curium. Christos might know where they were stored and or moved to. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if George didn't bury them somewhere in the garden. I can truly say I never laid eyes on them, but that my questions when hunting for them were put aside by some such vague answer.
I'll let you know later what I think about the typewriter. Pica type is mostly too big to fit into the cat lists as I ruled them, but maybe with modified margins it will work well.
Best of luck, kids--
