Dear G. Roger:
Various things/ Stillwells: BOAC twittered and referred the question to London (no answer as yet) and in the meantime the Princeton travel agent, whom Dick had approached before I told him about paying in pounds, came forth with exactly the accomodations, with just the stop-overs wanted, on T.W.A. Both coming and going are of course at the most very crowded time of year; and a limit was set of March 10 for making deposit to hold down the reservation. I therefore called the office of T.W.A. and found that the fares can be paid perfectly well in pounds to T.W.A., and no questions asked. We have therefore taken the deposit necessary to hold the places (probably about $100) and will be reimbursed by Fro from the account in the Chase Bank. For the balance in pounds, T.W.A. will get in touch with you and bill you for the balance in Athens, who will in turn get in touch with you and bill you for the balance in pounds, letting you know to whom they should be paid in Cyprus. So you should probably be hearing from T.W.A. Athens. The office here told me that this balance should be paid out three weeks to a month before time of departure, let us say by the middle of May, which should give you plenty of time to get the pounds from the Passouri if not the Cyprus Airways stocks. The arrangement seems eminently satisfactory; by the expenditure of about $3000 in pounds (or rather, save about 3000 by spending them in pounds). When I hear from Dick I will let you know the exact amount; he hoped they might be content here with a deposit of only about $250. I hate to have Fro draw on the whole, I think the arrangement satisfactory, but under the circumstances it seems to be necessary, and on the Chase Bank account, but under the circumstances it seems to be necessary, and on the whole I think the arrangement satisfactory; of course if she does not the situation changes as she has applied for; of course if she does not go, and we will have to make other arrangements.
Yours of the third. Sotira. If you expect to have a considerable surplus, especially if it is largely in pounds, I do not think we can begrudge L 120, which are after all only about $350, to Dikaios to finish up properly at Sotira. The question of publication on the other hand is another matter. [Both Fro and I and probably you $too think that Khirokitia, though an admirable publication, is far more elaborate than it needs to be; perhaps a sherd by sherd account of the first neolithic excavation might be justified, but hardly of the second. We would therefore be inclined to say to Dr. either campaign it into Monograph proportions, or count on getting someone else to do the more elaborate exhausting format later. We would point out that monographs are not a bit ungenerous: the Giddings one runs to 150 pages of text and 50 plates, and the youngs are hoping for 73 plates. Ellen points out that the font used in the monographs is much smaller that that in Khirokitia; so that 150 pages in it are probably the equivalent of about 250 of Khirokitia in content. The answer would then seem to be, another Khirokitia, NO; a fat monograph, yes. No hope of Phi,osophical society in this case, because they would immediately ask us, on application, if we approved, and we could hardly do so having just decided no to another Khirokitia ourselves. I hope this expresses clearly the general reaction of Rainey, Ellen and myself; but Dikaios and you should have in mind as a monograph standard, not necessarily Cox but rather Giddings and or Young. Perhaps I should say not a monograph standard, but a monograph possibility.
