February 22, 1958Dear Joe:
Many thanks for yours of 10 and 14 February and the two sun-prints of Kourion and Apollo grid plans. No doubt we seem a graceless lot misplacing (I prefer not to think that they are irrevocably lost, merely [handwritten: SOMEWHERE!]) plans and drawings on which you have lavished so much care. However, you will be cheered to know that we are at least on the road to reform. I have this year acquired a section of a metal cabinet for storing Cypriote plans: it takes a good many, unfortunately not the large ones but maybe they will get a roof over their heads yet someday[handwritten: !]
The immediate purpose of the grid plans (no doubt each successive author will require his own modification) is to keep T. Mitford from snapping at my heels. He needs grid references for the find-spots of the inscriptions he is publishing. I quote:
"I would like an overall plan, gridded, of the whole Curium area, Acropolis, Stadium, and Apollo Sanctuary, etc., if such is available, for easy reference in discussing provenance..."
I myself regard the use of a single gridded plan of this whole huge area as impracticable and I am about to write him to that effect. I am suggesting instead that he use:
1 & 2: the grids of Apollo and Kourion which you have just sent me sunprints of[handwritten: ;] 3 and/or 4 (depending on his needs)
3) a contour plan which I have the original of here, NOT gridded, of the coastal area from just beyond Kalorizicki; Apollo to just beyond Kalorizki map
4) the Water Supply plan of Kourion Territory with the addition of any site names (e.g. Ayia Anna) which he needs.
It makes sense to me to give grid locations for inscriptions found on the Acropolis and at Apollo. For those found outside (e.g. syllabic inscriptions carved on rocks, in situ, a dot or an x on one of the more comprehensive plans should do.
The grid of Apollo we would reproduce in publication as it appears in the Young monograph of which you have a copy, that is, the same size. The Acropolis grid we would reproduce at ca 3/5 of the size of the sunprint you sent: actually 21 inches from one corner of the grid to the other widthwise (let the vertical measurement fall where it may). I will try to have a drawing made from the sunprint of the Apollo grid here. For the Acropolis grid could you make a copy at the scale I have suggested for publication (21 inches corner to corner of grid). Would you please supply Mr. Mitford with two (2) sunprints of the grid at this scale:(1) with the other ... [handwritten: ...] ... (2) with the old trenches indicated, with their designations...
