April 21, 1954Dear Joe:
Should have done this ages ago. I am sending you (under separate cover) a couple of monographs so that you can see how text and plates are set up.
Plates can either be all right-pages with lists of captions on the left, or can be lefts and rights with captions under each phot. You can estimate space for the captions now that you see the fonts involved.
You do not really have to have your prints done over reduced to the exact size you want them. The only thing is to have the best possible prints (any size) from the negatives. Have them the degree of black and white you consider best. The press takes care of the reductions when they do the plate-making. If you plan your own plates, just make dummy sheets on any weight of paper, indicating in pencil the frames of the pictures to the size you want them and in the position you want them. As you know, the most important thing is that the indicated frame should be in exact proportion to the print as trimmed, or else according to little corner markings on the print.
I am getting discouraged on the subject of quest for dictionaries. But neither have I had definite word that they are out of print. Just no word at all is what I get, but I shan't stop trying yet.
Drop me a note sometime telling me what goes with Joe, what is in bloom in that lovely garden of yours, and how the small fry are growing up.
As always.
