Curium Excavations Episkopi Limassol, Cyprus 9 Sep 53
Dear Fro:
First Curium report:
We (Jack Benson & I) arrived in Nicosia on the 4th from Ankara. I spent most of that day and the next there discussing matters with P. Dikaios, representing the Department of Antiquities (Peter Megaw being on leave). We are assured their cooperation and interest, as we would expect from of old. I also called on the American Consul, to let him know that I was available in case of need. He seemed to feel that His part in the settlement of McFadden matters was pretty much at an end, only the dogs and horses remaining for disposal.
We came on to Episkopi on the 6th. Having looked around and gotten settled in, I can now let you know the state of our affairs and prospects.
Our financial status at the present moment (I have now taken over the Curium Excavation account in Limassol) is as follows:
1.$1360.96 Travellers' checks & cash
2.300.00 Phila. Curium Fund (minus whatever Gloria paid out for Curium shipment)
3.353.70 Remaining on deposit in Chase Nat'l Bank $2014.66
4.£197-11-4 On deposit, Curium Exc. acc't., Limassol Ba
5.20-0-0 Cash on hand £217-11-4 = ca. $610.00
Total assets: ca. $2624.66
This total takes into account the $1000. which you forwarded to Joe. The cabled $1000. reached him Sept. 7, and this was deposited in Limassol, minus c.a. £99. which he had to borrow from the bank while he was awaiting receipt of the $1000., and minus £60. which was turned over to me for current expenses. The check for $1000. sent by surface mail (5¢ postage!) reached him Sept. 8. He has turned this over to me. I assume that the treasurer's office will wish to cancel this check and to have me destroy it. I will hang on to it, however, until they let me know. Please have them inform me.
Of the above assets, I think it would be advisable for Items 1-3 to remain intact and untouched for the present. #1 can be considered our backlog for emergency $ needs. #2 is to remain in Philadelphia for small expenditures from that end. #3 at present is our deposit in the Chase Bank to keep the account open. #4&5, ca. $610.00, remain for current use here in Curium. Using RSY's estimate of expenses and checking on the spot here
