Dear Roger:

I am much obliged for yours of October 27th. I received at the same time a copy of one from Sir Panyotis to John Ewing. Everything seems to be going very well and I certainly want to compliment you on the way you have been handling this. Mr. Hill was here on Friday and also seemed very pleased with the way things are going there.

I have just clarified, with the University Treasurer, the matter of the disposal of the stocks by Sir Panyotis in Cyprus. The Treasurer has authorized me to ask Sir Panyotis to sell them and so, I think this letter will serve as his authorization to procede with the disposal. I will also advise Mr. Ewing of this authority from the University of Pennsylvania.

The only thing we will need here now, as I see it, is the estimate of value of things which we are to buy from the estate so that Mr. Ewing and I can take care of that transaction here. I have small hope of working over the financial statements here to show that equipment there was charged off against contributions here. In any case, we will try and let you know what luck we have.

We are also sending back the check book which Mr. Hill had. He left it off with me to send to you. There seem to be no other details regarding this which we have to take care of now. The only thing is, I should like to again urge you to close everything up this season which I am sure you are also anxious to do. As you know it would be very rough on our funds if we had to maintain Curium after this year and so we would very much like to be able to turn it over to the Cyprus Antiquities Department before you leave there.

If this reaches you before Rodney has left for Ankara please give him all our best regards and wish him luck in negotiations with the Turks. Everything is going fine here and I am glad to learn through Ellen that you are now a confirmed booster for Cyprus. My only concern is that you might like it too much and therefore not close for good that site this year. I too felt it was like the Island of Nepenthe and can fully understand why George was determined to work there for the rest of his life. In any case, I hope you have some fun out of it.

Best wishes,

Froelich Rainey Director
