June 2, 1953Dear Joe:

We have a hell of a problem on our hands. The Cyprus, I understand, will have to appoint something called an Ancillary Administration for George's estate there, and you will probably have a Cyprus lawyer breathing down [handwritten: their] neck, trying to determine what is George's personal property and what there was purchased with University Museum funds, I.e. funds turned over by George to the Museum account. I suppose George would by most things on the Museum account because they would then be deductable from tax. Do you think Christophi can dig out of the records there a pretty clear statement as to what of the property there was purchased by George on the Museum account and what was purchased from his personal account before he turned it over to the Museum. It would certainly help if he could draw up a statement in this respect, both for the lawyer there and for us here.

Again, I hate to bother you with things like this and feel much indebted to you, but I am afraid these legal entanglements are inevitable. Also, can you let me know what money you have available there from the Museum account in the Limassol Bank, which I presume Hill turned over to you.

Best wishes,

Froelich Rainey Director
