SAUL S. WEINBERG 211 JESSE HALL COLUMBIA, MISSOURI
May 22, 1953Dear Roger:
Commiserations - this is never a nice kind of job to have to do, and I speak from experience. But being in Cyprus is always nice - give my best to all there.
The program sounds reasonable, if you can get the personnel to carry it out; that's the big problem. I will try to lighten the load by stating my position, perhaps someone. I would like to have done is to go through all the crossmending and other material from Bamboula, get all the sherds that hasn't been done, get all the stuff together and have the various strata sorted out, brought level by level. Pete had already given dates for each building which I am accepting tentative dates for each final check. I do not wish to do this myself. If I were when we studied to give a final dates until this final check. If, thru the things get organized, you will tell me who is to go through the whole job and do the tombs will know there all that I know.
I have on Pete's dating, which would be of help in this manuscript. I have of his which would be of help in this part of the problem. If I get that far, I send a copy of my manuscript in one of its intermediate drafts, so you will know there all that I know.
I wonder about the Wace idea. He's deeply involved in Mycenae, will be digging there again this summer and spending next year at the Inst. Vol.II of the CAH, working it up. He hasn't yet written his chapters for Vol.II - is it wise to turn over the had on hand to do for years. Is it wise to turn over what you want to get on with early publication? If they, too, both those in Cyprus and the tombs in Phila. Wace's commuting would be very ever does and those involved, I feel, especially if you ask him to do the tombs over to him. advantageous for that, but if you turn all the stuff would be too much for Wace to handle, but if Benson did that, they would have to coordinate their efforts considerably.
I would think it well to turn all the settlement stuff over to be too much for Wace to handle, but if Benson did that, they would
The BBA settlement can wait, but while you're in Cyprus I think it would be definitely worth while mentioning it to Megaw who already knows of it as I told him when he was here, and see under what terms they might be interested in doing it. Then perhaps while I'm in Greece in '54-'55 a grant might be got to do it. It certainly won't hurt to explore the matter.
