it remains unclear whether or not whether the "stratigraphic considerations" mentioned will entail further work on his part in Cyprus [handwritten: xxxx] I shall have to find out. If Benson works on the remaind r of Bamboula, I should think it would be all to the good to have Saul be editor for his work. If Mr. Wace, of course, that's a different matter.

He says further: "The only understanding between George and me, about which you may not know, was that he had asked me to come to Cyprus for a few months next year, when i shall be over on sabbatical, to excavate the fine Early Bronze settlement that i explored on the surface while I was there. It looks most promising and George wanted me to dig it. Whether or not that will come into any of the plans remains to be seen. I had thought of doing it the summer of 1955, for next summer we want to travel about Europe on our way to Greece."

This is another kettle of fish. A. I don't see how we could engage to include this in the budget, even if we felt it a binding obligation, which I don't. B. [handwritten: x]Sept. 1954, is regarded as the deadline for us, I'm sure, as far as Fro is concerned. 1955 is out.

Think to point this out to him. Also to suggest that if there is actually any need for a further visit to Cyprus to take care of the "stratigraphic considerations" (e.g. examination of stratified sherds) he'd better think about summer 1954. And we will have to budget accordingly, somehow. No objections to his doing the Early Bronze Age site, but think it would have to be under other auspices and with specific permit from the Dep't of Antiquities.

Gads, as Ellen would say, wish you or Mr. Hill or Peter Megaw were here right now. But guess I have to start making decisions now, right or wrong.

As to substitutes. Miss Swindler out, Mrs. Holland out. Cabled to Homer or(c)part-time of Harrison, (b) release of Smithson for one semester, Homer cables back: Harrison impossible, Smithson or shoe difficult. Try Rebecca or Norman Doenges. Wrote back in more detail pleading for Lucy. Explained we thought here it would mean only one day a week. Thursday, for introductory Course and general supervision of graduate students. Numerous other courses will be given at Bryn Mawr with RC, MJM, and MIS all on the job; other suitable courses to be had in Oriental section. Thus our graduate program could be filled out. No museum work, since it is hoped Ellen will take care of that. Thought it might be just as well to be outrageous while I was at it, so said could we borrow his wife? Not a bad idea, if she'd like it. You'd have to bear some brunt, though.

My proposal for taking care of Agora and Corinth you know. Don't expect answer now, but shall depart prepared for that possibility. It may seem naughty to you, but it's the best I can think of. Obviously Curium has to be done now.

I wonder if you know what state George's Ms of Apollo is in, if any? If Bamboula gets booted around, maybe I'd do well to settle on Apollo. Or maybe Kalorizki tombs, if we are expected to do any more with them. Only three of 40 tombs published yet, to the best of my knowledge.

So much for Cyprus now. Am very much impressed with Phrygian wall. Cave excerpt to Fro, pointing out that the Museum may have a Phrygian Pompeii on its hands. It certainly looks like it, with such excellent preservation and x the fine clay blanket covering all. Think you are much too modest about it, but then guess you're right to be conservative until the bird is in hand.

New reservations: Leave NY June 13; stop overnight Amsterdam 14-15, for breather; for train to Polatli for evening of 19, arriving Polatli ungodly hour A.M. getting reservation orders not to meet. Too cruel on workday. Any errands? Strict Yrs.
