Dear Mr. Hill:
I just have the long report from Rodney on your discussions in Cyprus and we are trying now to act on these recommendations in the best possible way so that the work there can go forward without any delay. However, there is one problem which bothers me and Mr. Madeira, President of the Board here. Both of us feel we should not accept Fales' money unless there is a fairly good chance that he is capable of doing the work. Rodney, from his letters, is obviously prepared to go along with your idea of giving Fales a break. It would just help my conscience a lot if you could write me saying you think there is a satisfactory manner. Certainly we need all the help and the funds we can get in this proposition but we would like your judgement on Fales' possibilities.
We ought to settle things today pretty much as you recommended, with Roger in charge on Cyprus next year. We will, of course, advise you in detail just what we have done and can do from this end. The Fales business is, for the moment, the most sticky decision.
Believe me, we all deeply appreciate your trip to Cyprus and the detailed recommendations as to what we should do. You will be glad to learn that at the Board meeting on Tuesday everyone was determined that we should complete all the publications on the excavations regardless of the difficulties and the cost. I hope you can get a note back to me soon so that I can advise Fales.
Very best wishes,
Froelich Rainey Director
