American Archeologist feared drowned

No Trace of him or his boat

Limassol, Monday. Mr. George McFadden, the American archaeologist, who has been in Cyprus for the past two years undertaking excavations at Curium, disappeared with his boat near Fanari yesterday. An extensive search has been made, but it is now feared that he has been drowned. The last news of Mr. MacFadden was that after bathing he and a friend, Mr. Chudleigh of the Near East Arab Broadcasting Station, decided to go out in Mr. MacFadden's boat. When they encountered heavy seas, Mr. Chudleigh jumped overboard but Mr. MacFadden remained in the boat. After Mr. Chudleigh had got safely to shore, he summoned the help of the Customs Authorities and Police, who organised an immediate search. The search continued today and was joined by an R.A.F. plane, but so far no trace of either Mr. MacFadden or the boat has been found, and it is now thought probable that the boat overturned in the heavy seas and that Mr. MacFadden lost his life.
