DEPARTMENT OF ANTIQUITIES NICOSIA

13th May, 1953Dear B.H.H.,

Gjerstad has repeated his enquiry on behalf of Hjortsjo-whether and when the skulls from the Curium excavations can be despatched to Stockholm on loan for him to study and include in his corpus of ancient Cypriot skulls.

George got out all the skulls (mainly from Bamboula) when Hjortsjo was here but time did not permit proper study. George said (I was there at the time) that if he found that there was no objection to this course he would arrange to have the skulls sent to Stockholm. He pointed out that Angel had come to deal with the skulls but had been taken ill and George did not know whether he would be able to come a second time.

Angel, whom I had already approached through Dikaios about the Khirokitia skulls, had said he had no objection to Hjortsjo studying anything that he had already studied. But George said he would have to obtain approval from Philadelphia to send the skulls to Sweden. Did he ever do this?

I told Gjerstad I would pass on his enquiry to you and that in any case your expedition would have no staff available at Episkopi to sort out, list and pack the skulls until September or October.

/I am

Dr. B.H. Hill, Episkopi
