… work toward publication which can be completed only on the site. Furthermore, I don't see very well how I can assume new responsibilities before I meet the ones I already have.

We have just barely completed our major excavations at Curium, and you realize, of course, that the work of many years can not be published in a fortnight. How long it is going to take is going to depend largely on the personnel that we have to do it. My own time for the next two years or more is going to be taken up in publishing the main buildings of the sanctuary. When this is done I will still have the Basilica and the Hellenistic necropolis.

At present no one is working on the Bronze Age site. Weinberg has undertaken to do the buildings. To do the pottery alone, however, is going to take at least fifteen months of solid hard work at Curium, and we have no one to do it now. Whoever does it will need the services of our local staff. Fales was to have done the palace and theatre but he has been ill for two years, and the question arises now whether he will be able to publish this site for the expedition or not.

If Curium is to be published properly and without delay our major problem is to find ways and means, and I hope my attitude toward my own responsibilities in this has your blessing and moral support.

At present I am going over the Youngs' publication of the figurines which they tell me will be ready by October. They are sending it up to the Museum in sections as each is completed. Judging from what I have seen already I don't think it will be necessary to make anything but very minor changes. They have asked me to write a preface for it which I will do when I have finished reading the manuscript.

Last year's preliminary report on the neolithic site of Sotira is about to appear in the Bulletin. Dekaios' report on recent excavations there will be forwarded to you in due course,

Looking forward to seeing you in a few days,

Yours as ever,

The Director, University Museum, 33rd & Spruce Streets, Philadelphia, Pa.
