Curium Mr. Fales McFadden George

April 11, 1953Mr. George McFadden Curium House Episkopi, Limassol Cyprus

Dear George:

Rodney wrote me about your discussions in Athens and your conclusions with regard to Fales. Rodney, apparently, was elected to write Fales telling him to turn in his notes for the chap from New Haven, who was to take over the job of describing the theater and the baths. Well, since than Fales has come in here with the very strange proposition that he be allowed two more years to complete the final report on the baths and the theater, and that if we allow him to do that, he will turn in to the Museum $10,000 to refund the Philosophical Society grant and $5,000 to cover the costs of another man to write up the baths and the theater if his reports at that time are not satisfactory. Since Rodney did the firing after consideration with you and Hill, I could not, of course, accept Fales's proposition without first clearing it with Rodney and with you. On the face of it, its sort of a fantastic proposition, but its true that the $15,000 would certainly help in completing the reports on Curium. Percy Madeira is anxious to accept Fales's proposition because he is a friend of Fales's father, and is embarrassed about the dropping of Fales from this work. I have just written Rodney urging that he accept for the sake of the Curium, and I would like to urge it upon you too. Isn't it possible that the fellow from New Haven could work on the Bronze Age site along with Weinberg? Also, Eisenhart of the Philosophical Society feels that if Fales turns in this money we could complete the propylaea and that early Christian church which as you remember, was supposed to be done under the grant. I don't know how this will shape your plans at Curium, but I am supposed to get your reactions before the first of May, when Fales was supposed to turn in his notes.

As you know, we are most anxious to get the reports on Curium completed as soon as possible because, almost inevitably, as time goes on, people drift away from this sort
