(6) has excavated on behalf of the University Museum expedition the new important neolithic site of Sotira north of the ancient city. Here on the top of a high hill square houses appeared for the first time in the history of neolithic Cyprus. These and the earlier type of round hut were found in the same building complex dating to about 3500 B.C. Their exceptionally fine state of preservation reflects the life of these early people in a way not often paralleled. In a single house divided into neat alcoves, we see where they made their tools, ground their grain, and shaped their pottery. The hearth too is placed apart in its own separate compartment, and in another the bench where they sat and slept. Many of their tools were found as they left them when some sudden catastrophe overcame their neatly established homes. It is hoped that excavations here may be continued in the near future. Half of the finds from this and other sites of the University will eventually go to the University Museum.
