… almost certainly Christ as his name occurs on another inscription in dactylic hexameters on a paved of the same mosaic [handwritten: Art. ...]
The history of the sanctuary therefore would embrace a period of some 1150 years. With the exception of Cesnola who sunk a few pits in the area some 70 years ago, we have been the first to explore the site since its destruction in the 4th century. It will not be possible, however, to learn very much about its early history judging from the quantity of coins the sanctuary prospered in the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C. but only foundation walls go back to this era. Many of these are under the floors of imperial buildings and to trace them elsewhere would require in some areas considerably more excavation. The early period therefore, if there is to be any publication of the site, cannot be dealt with in any detail at the present time. I have discussed the subject of my thesis with the Department of Art and Archeology and I am sending a copy of this letter to Mr. Friend. wishing you a happy New Year and looking forward to seeing you in the late Spring or Summer.
