Mr. DeCoursey Fales, Jr. Curium Excavations Episkopi, Limassol, Cyprus

Dear Mr. Fales:

I am sorry you had to prod me. The coins have been waiting for some time for me to get around to returning them and they are now on their way back to you.

I also am sorry about the questions of identification on the coins you returned. This ought not to happen but I know why it does. All the coins are gone over twice and sometimes a revision will be made the second time. This correction ought, of course, to be carried in both places and usually is, but in these cases I have slipped up. It did not seem to me advisable to unpack the coins I am now returning and check them all again so that you may find some similar discrepancies in these lots. If so, you need not return the coins to me, for the correct identification is on my cards. If you will tell me the number and the two identifications given, I can tell you which is the right one. You will see that there are some blanks on my very easily. These are Greek coins dealt with by Miss Cox which lists. I believe she returned to Philadelphia or may have taken with her to Cyprus. I am sorry to say that in the cases of C 3290 and C 3475 put down by her as Ptolemy I in one place and Ptolemy VIII-IX in another, I can be of no help to you. She took away all her records and since her Ptolemy datings are not always in conformity with the books it would be reckless of me to try to make the decision. She is, as you know, at Gordium and may be reached through the embassy at Ankara. Whether she has her records available there I do not know but of course she can get them when she returns to America.

I have completed the catalogue of the Roman and Byzantian coins and am now writing a brief commentary before sending it on to Philadelphia. As to the plans of publication, I have no information but a number of things might be done, any one of which would be satisfactory to me.

I understand that you are to be at Dumbarton Oaks next year which I am very glad to hear.

Yours sincerely,
