6 October 1949Dear Rodney:

Nobody knows better than I how many letters I really owe people, but owe or not, you are to be the lucky recipient of this one. I know how hellishly busy you are, and I have no high hopes of a communication from the Med. Section in the next few days. I have received, I think, all the messages via sundry channels that you have sent me, and have acted on most of them—the rest were merely "tender greetings", or so they were called in a letter from one Roger.

Shall I begin by telling you what I did? or what I didn't get done? The latter would sound too awful, so here it is: a brief list of what is finished and filed away—and by various methods, with appropriate comments.

(1) JTD film file, 5 copies. The original of this, plus the check-list of all the negatives traced down at Kour'on, has been mailed to you at Phila, but Yales is "ringing a change"... but I trust.

(2) VG film file, 3 copies. The carbons reside in file case. All negatives are accounted for, except the "Bamboula" list, which are with JTD's negs. All labeled & filed.

(3) MCF films—all negatives are now in order and labeled, and the prints are filed in envelopes. But I didn't make a check list, because in the nature of things I wasn't sure I had found all the available prints. It took some days of matching, but now the available prints can at least be found, and that has yet to be emptied into the appropriate envelopes of the new file. Files probably won't give the job very high priority, but it will eventually be done. But as for a typed list of all the titles for MCF's 120-some rolls, there just wasn't time. It would have been too slow because of certain idiosyncrasies of orthography. I thought it more rewarding to do things that I could do fast and finish off for you.

(4) Kalorizjki Tombs. All the tombs remaining at Kourion are now catalogued and awaiting distribution. Also complete descriptions taken from JTD notebooks have been typed, and those of Nicosia tombs have been delivered to Mr. Dikaios. By now Christophis has done all the Kalorizjki tomb plans, and can mail off those belonging to Nicosia, and those to Phila whenever you say. I sent first carbons to Nicosia of their tomb information, supposing that Phila should have the originals. Mr. Dikaios suggested that tomb 38 and "Voupha" that is. Tomb 4 was already awarded to Phila, and is now catd and on shelf awaiting shipment.

The notebook write-ups are done, 2 copies. First carbons of Nicosia's are in the hands of Mr. Dikaios. Then I left, Christophis had not yet started the Bamboula plans.

(5) Bamboula Tombs. Catalogued the remaining objects from Bamboula tombs, so that final distribution can be made, nos. 38 ... there were a few blanks in the body of the material, but these I was afraid to fill because, although no write cards were in file with those numbers, some negatives on the film list of JTD Kalorizjki material appeared with those numbers, and therefore there may be pots somewhere. I did a shelf-check for everything I had time for, but there are some things I can't find, and I couldn't get all the stones in the "Basilica Marble Pile" marked up—there were just too many. They are probably perfectly OK, and are located under the tables in the center of the East apse, but some day when the detail is are settled for the first part of each class, and another day I can easily be made for Phila. As for duplications, I corrected all my own (Kalorizjki material on which I used Jv's Apollo numbers at first) plus a shelf-full of incised handles. It is no cinch to make changes because five records have to be changed for each one—the object, the notebook, the inventory, and the film file if the picture has
