excavated enough to show that at some later period of use it was intentionally closed off. The south end of the eastern part of the cavea terminated in a wall which is preserved to a height of about ten feet. There is a floor at the foot of this wall of heavy flagstones. On the top of the cavea, enough has been excavated to bring to light what appear to be the bases for some form of columnar support of roof which protected the audience in the topmost rows. At the present, there appear two anomalies in the plan of the theater: the existence of large caves in the cavea and an irregularly curved orchestra. The caves were supported inside by square columns and how the mouths of the caves were filled in with the general scheme may well be revealed at least in part by future excavations. The west of the orchestra and the wall of the west wing do not at present form a natural curve with the rest of the building.
Two trucks are at work carrying away the soil that is dumped in from above. Because of the seeming anomalies of the plan and because the trucks cart away much more than could be done by wheel-barrow or tracks, it has been decided to excavate the whole or nearly all of the theater. When this has been done, the monument so revealed may be impressive.
