11th March, 1949Dear Mrs. Robbins,
In reply to your letter of the 24th February to Mr. Last I have the following information in regard to insuring motor vehicles in Cyprus. I take it the last word in para 1 of your letter should read Cyprus not Iran.
1. Although many Cypriots do not insure their cars, responsible people usually effect a comprehensive insurance.
2. The comprehensive insurance covers loss as a result of damage by fire. Cover for fire alone would cost, in the case of the Jeep, about 8 shillings per cent while the car is in the garage of £2 per cent when in operation. These rates are for one year.
3. There is no legal requirement here for the owner of a motor vehicle to carry public liability insurance but this is included in the comprehensive policy at a cost, in the case of such a car as the Jeep of £6 a year.
4. The annual premium for the Jeep covering fire, theft and public liability insurance would be about £18.5.0 assuming a value of £400. This is subject to a reduction of 20% if the owner bears the first £5 of any loss and also a "no-claim" reduction of 10% in subsequent years.
5. If the Jeep is shipped to Turkey the local insurance company will cover marine risks and arrange with Agents in Turkey for insurance there if desired.
Very sincerely,
G. H. McFadden
