Athens, July 5, 1948. Dear George, Your letter of June 30 reached me two days ago, and I found your telegram when I returned last evening from a one-day's visit to Corinth. I have sent word to Mrs. Nikitas to get into touch with the Am. Ex. about her and the children's journey to Cyprus, and have told Am Ex that I will provide exchange for the tickets as soon as they know when Mrs. ch. is to be ready. She will learn from them what papers she has to secure, if she has not got all already, before she can have.

[margin left: Young's transp] If at this late date John can book passage by the "Mauretania" Aug 20 or the "Queen Mary", Aug 25 he will probably do well to go home via Southampton, since he would get to N.Y. a week or ten days earlier than if he goes by the "Nea Hellas" from Piraeus Aug. 21. The saving in cost will, I fear, not be so much as he is reckoning, for it is hard to believe that the fare Nicosia-London is only £50 when that from Athens to London (not counting the tax) is £50-10-, and the airlines folder I have has £66. Nicosia- London. (The various lines no longer compete in rates charged, I am told.) I hope, if I write brave trees that the tree circles purchased is only a wild loquat already on our property, you will have enough to do before you leave without having to buy trees. By the way, has the thermogene well been paid for?

John asks whether I perhaps sail by either of the ships he is trying for. No, mine is the "Queen Elizabeth", Sept. 1.
