… proper notes and photographs there should be no problem about being able to finish the publication, and I am sure that their desire to do so will be kept alive by the fact that they have a personal stake in the work which is more important than the question of who happens to be paying them at the moment. In view of the fact that they are definitely in the market for a job in this country, it seems to be rudimentary wisdom for us to be prepared for the worst, and to plan the work of the coming months accordingly.

I think that you should know, if you do not already, that we have agreed to their staying on against our better judgement. Both Rainey and I feel that if it is a question of choosing between the excavation excavating at Apollo and keeping on the Youngs, the excavation should recieve priority. My own personal feeling, known to George and expressed confidentially now, is that two people should have been able to complete the work by this time, and I am a little bit afraid that their work will drag on and on unless they are faced with a definite deadline. In all events we have deferred in this matter to George's and your wishes.

I was glad that you are agreeable to giving Mitford access to the Kourion inscriptions for inclusion in his Corpus, and will write to tell him of this. I assume that we will be prepared to supply him with squeezes and the necessary information about the contexts in which they were found. He should be willing, under the circumstances, to pass on to us any information which he may have concerning parallels to our material and in general anything bearing on it. All in all I think that it is an arrangement which will be advantageous to both parties concerned.

As you know, John Young has charge of reporting on archaeological news from Cyprus for Bradford Welles' annual report in the AJA. I earnestly report which also embodies Mrs. Blegen's report from Greece. I hope to hope, both as editor and as curator, that you will authorize him to include an informal report on the year's work at Kourion. I would particularly like to have you make a photograph of the new statue available. It is, as you know, common practise to announce such a discovery even before the final study has been completed, and such an announcement would give us invaluable publicity, which we need badly now that we are forced to appeal to the foundations for financial help.

Rainey has asked me to withdraw John's reports on the stadium and the tesacottas from the museum Bulletin, so I have substituted for it a brief summary of our work at Kourion since the beginning, with a brief statement of future plans. I did not bother to submit it to you, first, because there wasn't time, and secondly because it contained nothing in any way confidential.

George has undoubtedly told you of the terms under which we have requested a grant from the Philosophical Society. There are two major conditions which have limited what we felt able to ask for. In the first place they specified state that they are not willing to pay a stipend for the personal expenses of the person conducting the research in question, since they feel that it is the duty of the institution with which he is associated to take care of this. In the second place they have consistently refused to take over the expenses of an entire excavation or to make a contribution to a general excavation fund. They are interested only in self-contained and complete projects. It seemed to us that the work on Kourion bluff … continues
