UNIVERSITY INTRAMURAL CORRESPONDENCE
TO Dr. Rainey FROM J.F. Daniel DATE 8 March, 1948 SUBJECT Recommendation for gift to Cyprus Museum.
Approval is hereby sought for the gift of the three vases described below to the Cyprus Museum, Nicosia, Cyprus:
MS 4115 Early Minoan II Bowl, from Vasiliki, Crete. MS 4605 Middle Minoan III Cup, from Gournia, Crete. MS 4279 Late Minoan I Jar, from Pseira, Crete.
Each of the above is of a common type, of which the museum retains better examples.
The possibility of such a gift was suggested during negotiations with the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, as partial recompense for the award to us of a very important vase from tomb 39 at Kourion. The vase in question was originally retained by the Cyprus government as "essential for the scientific complement of the Cyprus Museum", whereupon negotiations were undertaken to have the allocation of objects revised in our favor in the matter of this one vase. The vase has now been awarded to us and is ready for shipment. It is important for future relations with the Cyprus government that our gift be sent to them without awaiting the arrival of the vase which we are acquiring.
It is therefore recommended that this gift be approved.
Sincerely yours,
Handwritten: John Franklin Daniel
