February 25, 1948Dear George:
I just have your letter of February 6th upon my return from Guatemala and am glad to learn that you do not seem too discouraged by my arbitrary limitation of additional funds for Curium from the Museum this year. I am not happy about your putting up additional funds yourself to cover the deficit but this is of course entirely up to you and we would be glad to see the work go on.
We will now put through the proposal to the Philosophical Society for an additional $9,000 but in doing this we have to state specifically what it is going to be used for and therefore I am afraid it will be impossible to add $9,000 to the jackpot without determining and specifying its use. Pete and I both feel that we would have a better case with the Philosophical Society if we asked for the money to be applied specifically for excavation of the Curium Bluff site and money to be applied specifically for excavation costs rather than salary for living expenses and and and
Therefore, before forwarding our proposal we will need your agreement that the money can be applied to the Curium Bluff site as such. I am sure because of the way the Philosophical Society works that we could not raise this sum simply to fill out work already being done and to obtain such a grant we must specify in detail exactly how it will be used. We can only hope that this will not interfere with the excavation of the other sites agreed in our program and that they can be carried out within the original $15,000 budget. I suppose we might be able to better determine this after you have completed the full year.
Very best wishes and good luck.
Sincerely yours,

P. S. The cost of clearing the sixteen cases of antiquities amounted to $55.96 for drayage, Customs, etc., and $212.00 for transportation from Cyprus to Philadelphia, or a total of $267.96.
P. P. S. I have asked Pete to write Hill regarding this matter and assume that you will get together before making your reply. Because Hill is a famous procrastinator I hope you will push the matter so that we can forward our proposal to the Philosophical Society.
