Mr. McFadden, January 20, 1948 (continuation) [handwritten: the balance outstanding on the Kourion Quad. University Cy. Coll. for...] Bop -2

1949-50 and 1950-51. This request will be based upon the excavation of the Palace, Basilica, Theater and Propylaeum. If we can obtain this grant the proportion of expenditures would look like this:

1947-48 Contribution:by McFadden :by University Museum :by Amer. Phil. Soc. $10,000 $5,000 $15,000 Total to be expended - $15,000

1948-49 $10,000 $5,000 $3,000 1949-50 $10,000 $5,000 $3,000 1950-51 ? 0 $3,000

We will approach the Philosophical Society with the idea that the three year project agreed with you last fall should be completed by the end of the 1950-51 season.

Pete and I have decided that his proposal would involve complicated bookkeeping and a series of commitments which are not desirable. If the Philosophical Society will agree to making the proposed grant this would solve our problems in a manner more satisfactory to everybody. Since you are very much involved in the Curium dig, as the principal donor as well as the excavator, I hope you will give me your very frank opinion as to whether this procedure makes sense.

I am very glad to hear that the excavations are proceeding so well. From the Museum's point of view, one of the nice things about Cyprus is that some of the material can be removed to the Museum. In these days of violent nationalism this is a rare circumstance. As you probably can gather we are having trouble with our excavation proposals all down the line in Turkey, Iraq and Central America. But things are looking a little more hopeful than they did a month or two ago.

Best regards to yourself and Mr. Hill and good luck for the rest of the season. I shall look forward to seeing you here next summer and I hope in Cyprus next fall.

As ever,
