RECOMMENDED PROGRAM FOR RESEARCH 1948-1953
I. The following is an outline of a tentative program of research during the next five years which is agreed by the staff of the Museum and recommended to the Expeditions Committee of the Board of Managers.
This recommendation is based upon the following assumptions: A. Research should be continued in the general fields in which the Museum has done outstanding work in the past. B. Funds and staff personnel should be concentrated in specific fields so that there is an optimum chance of completing and publishing definitive and significant research. These fields should not overlap with those being developed by other institutions in the U. S. C. Any five year program must remain a general objective, subject to change at any time because of unpredictable factors - i.e., discoveries in the field during that period, staff changes, fluctuations in income, altered political situations in the countries concerned, changes in rates of monetary exchange, etc.. But an agreed program extending over a period of years is necessary in order to give direction to the Museum's research and to assure significant and published contributions to knowledge. D. Members of the staff should not spend more than three years in the field during a five year period. E. Agreements permitting the export of a reasonable part of the collections excavated must be obtained with each country concerned.
II. The present staff of Curators as well as the traditional fields of research for the University Museum dictate the policy of concentrating our research in: A. Babylonian Area B. Eastern Mediterranean Area C. Central American Area D. U. S. and Northern Mexico (Early Man, Indian Linguistic Research, Ethnological Research)
