THE UNIVERSITY MUSEUM UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA 33RD & SPRUCE STREETS, PHILADELPHIA 4
December 4, 1947Dear George:
I am glad to have your letter of November 15th and the report that work in Curium is going on so well. Pete has also received a letter from Hill which I gather agrees to the general program we worked out while you were here. I trust that we can follow that program more or less as defined, since, as you know the Cyprus dig will be one of four major excavations during the next five years and with this kind of program we must do rather careful planning.
On the basis of past work at Curium I asked for and got approval for the expenditure of $15,000 from University Museum funds to be used for three seasons of excavation at Curium in a five year period. This was based on the assumption that costs would be $15,000 per season and that the Museum would put up a third while you put up two thirds as in the past. I gather from your letter that you now feel costs may run to $20,000 a season. If that is the case we may have to reconsider the matter since I am now limited by my own program to supply no more than $15,000 for Curium for five years. In any case, anything you can do to spell out costs and excavation programs in consideration detail will be very helpful to us. This is particularly true now when Pete and Sam are attempting to estimate costs of excavation in Turkey and Iraq. Your present experience in post-war excavation at Cyprus should now give us a better idea of costs in the Mediterranean in general.
My own plans are still unsettled. Linton thinks I should go down to Guatemala in February or March to assist in renewal of excavations at Piedras Negras and I am very anxious to accompany Pete and Sam when they do the preliminary reconnaissances in Turkey and Iraq next fall. In the meantime, I have to do some teaching and at the same time push along plans for a reorganization in the Museum. My very best wishes to both Dr. Hill and yourself.
Sincerely,
