[handwritten: Curium] [handwritten: Ciliciae?]

October 21, 1947Dear George:

Sorry to hear that you have been temporarily knocked out with Asthma and a cold but I trust that by this time the sun of Cyprus has done its best for you.

I have some very good news for you in that the Board of Managers approved our entire research program for a five year period. It covers excavations in Guatemala and the Mayan area for the American Section, excavations in Turkey and Cyprus for the Mediterranean Section, as well as incidental research in Early Man in America. In planning this program I assumed that we should not undertake excavations at any one site for more than three years during the next five year period. This should allow us to keep publications more or less current with excavations and avoid some of the lag between digging and publishing. Moreover, it spreads our income and accumulated funds over a longer period and results in a more practical research plan.

I included Curium as part of the over-all program and therefore calculated three excavation seasons during the coming five years. I also assumed our contribution to be $5,000 for each of the three seasons during the five year period. This may be unfounded assumption regarding your contribution during that period but I saw no other way of presenting a complete research program to the Board of Managers. None of us, of course, is committed. It is just the statement of the general objective in research which the Board has approved with the understanding that modifications are bound to take place during the coming five years.

Since we have got approval for this kind of program I am more than ever anxious that we obtain approval for this from you and Dr. Hill the concurrence in the three seasons of excavation program discussed when you were here. I am glad that you feel that the Temple of Apollo can be completed in three seasons and that you will proceed this season with excavations, I was somewhat surprised that you were beginning with the Hellenistic Cemetery and I hope that this does not interfere with Apollo since I have presented our program in Cyprus on the basis of the completion of certain sections for publication during the coming five year period. But, as you know, I am not familiar with this excavation and trust that you and Dr. Hill will work out the excavation details with Pete who is anxious to hear how your work is progressing. Also, in connection with this general program for the Museum's research, we are very anxious to have your budget statement for this year. I obtained Board approval to advance $5,000 for the Curium dig immediately and will, of course, do so but I would feel easier in my mind if I had a fairly detailed statement of your expected expenditures for this season. As I understand it we will also advance funds to the Ottoman Bank at Limassol for you to draw against. The University Treasurer has advised of your deposit.

We are also arranging to deposit the $3,200.00 fund to the account of the Youngs in the Springfield Safe Deposit and Trust Company in two allotments as you suggest.

It is very gratifying to have set the direction of the Museum in a comprehensive research program so early in the year. It will now be possible to make
