14 January 1946Mr. George H. McFadden "Bloomfield" Villa Nova Pennsylvania

Dear Mr. McFadden,

Thanks for your letter of January 10 giving me further references on the qualifications of Dr. Rodney Young as a possible Curator of the Classical Section of The University Museum.

I also note what you say about the desirability of having Mr. Daniel complete the work which he began in Cyprus.

As I think I said to you when you stopped in here the other day, under the law Mr. Daniel is entitled to return to his former position with The University Museum, if he wishes to do so. Should this be the case, the Museum will have to take him back at least in his former capacity.

Whether Mr. Daniel will be willing to complete the work in Cyprus before returning to this country is, I think, a matter which only he can determine. In as much as he has been away in the Service for a long time, and is married, I do not think it would be proper for The University Museum to try to influence his judgment as to whether or not he should return to this country whenever he may be discharged from the Army. As a matter of fact, it is more than likely that he would have to return to this country before he can be discharged, and in that case he would probably wish to stay here for some reasonable time.

I further note from your letter that you think that possibly Dr. Young would be willing to act as Curator on a temporary basis. As I also said to you when you were here, the University of Pennsylvania will first have to determine whether or not they will pay the salary of a full Curator for this section, before I could even discuss the matter with Dr. Young.

Yours very sincerely,
