In regard to the proposed excavation on the acropolis at Athens, Mr. Hill in a recent letter writes as follows:
"There is apparently to be little or no excavation in Greece this season, costs being entirely uncertain, and the authorities disinclined to issue any but very restricted permits-for a little work cleaning etc. on old sites."
As a possible alternative I thought you might be interested in a neolithic site in Cyprus. Two important ones in recent years have been excavated by the Department of Antiquities here under the field directorship of Likaios, the Assistant Director of Antiquities, who is a specialist in this period. Before the war he excavated usually for about two months in the year. As you will note in my letter to Mr. Hill, this year, owing to lack of funds, he will be able to excavate for two weeks only. My thought [handwritten: was] to invite him to excavate for the University Museum for a limited period with the understanding that half the finds should go to Philadelphia. [handwritten: The] publication of the site might be included in our final publication of Curium. As it would be impossible for Mr. Dikaios, as a civil servant, to work for us while in the employ of the British Government, it would be necessary for us to pay his salary for the period during which he was working for us. I should be glad to contribute fifty percent of the funds required, and up to $1,500.00. For neolithic sites in Cyprus I can refer you to
