Percy G. Madeira, Esq., Land Title Building, Philadelphia, Pa.
Dear Mr. Madeira:
Here are the references I promised to send to you for Dr. Young's qualifications.
Professor H. L. Crosby, former professor at the University of Pennsylvania, No. 4312 Osage Avenue, Philadelphia, Director of the American School for Classical Studies at Athens before the war. Dr. R. Carpenter, new Director of American School for Classical Studies at Athens, just appointed, living at Media but address not known.
Professor L. Shero, Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pa. Professor Richard Stillwell, Princeton University, Princeton.
As you know, Mr. Daniel was assistant curator of the Classical Section in the Museum before the war, and it is my understanding that he is now a possible candidate for the vacant full curatorship of this section.
I feel, as you know, very strongly,- whether he is to become curator or not,- that he should be arranged, if this can be in Cyprus, if this work which he began before becoming committed to any other activities. I understand from the present Director of the Museum that he might not be able to act as curator in the immediate future, and I think Dr. Young might be willing to act as curator for the present anyway, even though a great need for a curator promise him more than a temporary position. Dr. Young will succeed him Professor Elderkin, at Princeton, retires to return to Greece this should he wish to do so. Dr. Young expects to return to Athens, unless in the meanwhile he winter to excavate in this country. Whether he returns to finds an attractive position in the Agora at Athens or not, however, will also depend probably on what funds can be made available for the Agora excavations.
very sincerely yours,
