… materials. The films remain in Cyprus.
The mailing covers, with their stamps, cancellations, and other markings, were bundled together after the record was made, and (at the suggestion of Mr. Pepper) are to be sold if possible for the benefit of the Museum.
On II, 10: the Cyprus Department of Antiquities required not only lists of finds but also photographs of the objects found in each tomb. etc. We made no group photographs, and so assembled Leica contact prints by finding place, pasting them into "plates" as for publication. These "plates" (which are not of course adequate for publication) were photographed with the same Leica, and enlarged prints were made which are adequate for reference. Note that Tombs 8 and 10 were prepared earlier than the others, and the negatives are in Cyprus, while the rest of the negatives showing the prepared plates were developed in Cairo and taken to America with VG's research papers. Most available copies of these "plates" were given to G.MacF. to take with him on Feb.6. 1946, to wit:
Tomb 5 3 various Pit 85 1 Blt Drms 1 Fin srcph 1 Classical 1 Miscel. 3 varions Trench 43 4 various Tomb 8 4 various Tomb 10 1
("objects associated with fallen sarcophagus")
This was done under the impression that all the negatives were in America. Other copies (it was agreed) probably exist among G.MacF.'s papers.
Beside the envelopes and folders listed, and the bundle of stamped covers to be sold, I left in the Museum on March 6, 1946, a roll of tracings from G.MacF.'s trenches, a roll of sunprints from VG's trenches, and a box of G.MacF.'s pictures (enlargements chiefly of his excavation rolls). Also two unopened envelopes addressed to J.F.Daniel (by VG).
I took with me to the Institute for Advanced Study, for consultation with experts, some duplicate sets of prints (illustrating most of the finds from the cemetery of St Hermogenes): the Hellenistic and Roman pottery has been examined by Miss Frances Jones, and the jewelry by Dr.Berta Segal. I took also some personal notes and a copy of my report and catalogue descriptions, all referring to Trench 43 and connected excavations.
Most of the records listed under (II) - all save two pencil lists, 2 and 5 - exist also in Episkopi, or did in April 1942. I find no lists of objects from Tombs 8 and 10; apparently none were made. These objects are to be studied by G.MacF.
N.b. Among my working notes I find informal photographer's lists which include Tombs 8 and 10 items app'tly taken from field note books, with additional notes resulting from mending, etc.
