December 12, 1946Dear Mr. McFadden:
Thank you so much for your generous check, in the amount of five hundred dollars, which has been deposited to the Curium Excavation Fund being held in this country. We will pay as you directed, five hundred dollars to John H. Young, and five hundred dollars to Suzanne H. Young. [handwritten: this being half of what you desire to be credited to John H. Young...]
In reading your letter of November twenty-first I realize that you intended the check (in the amount of one thousand dollars which you sent us on July sixteenth) to be used for some purpose in the Museum other than Curium. It arrived during my absence this summer and Mr. Madeira unfortunately deposited it to the Curium Fund as you will see by the enclosed statement. I say "unfortunately" because the Museum is so desperately in need of funds for other activities and if you intended to contribute to these, as you in the past had so indicated, I am very sorry that the plan went awry.
Your trip over must have been full of interest and excitement and I am no end envious of you. The Museum is boiling along and Dr. Daniel is run ragged with his work on the Archaeological Journal and setting up a special exhibition on the spread of Greek Culture, so I am sure he would willingly change places with you.
Do let us know how you are and a very merry Christmas to you!
Ever sincerely,
